ok, here's the deal. I have a 2007 20 inch iMac that has gotten really slow. I will replace it next year when Mac OS X Lion comes out with the 27 inch model. But what should I do to speed this thing up until then. I called a couple stores about adding an SSD and they said it would be about $500. Is there anything else I can do? Thanks!

In addition what size is the internal HD and how much available space does it have?

It's a 2GHz intel core 2 duo with 4GB RAM. 250GB HDD with 100GB space left. It's aluminum and I just use it for Internet, iPhoto stuff. iTunes. Nothing heavy at all. But it's just so slow now. Everything takes 7 or 8 "bounces" to even open.

it really should not be that slow with a core 2 duo and 4 gb ram it should be flying through these basic things you do , i would first repair permissions , as that can cause the slow down , and yes onyx is a good tool to clear out all the "dust"and cobwebs" you collect over time on the harddrive , i also would do a full hardware test if everything is function as it's supposed to function , for example bad sectors on the hdd or ram on its last legs ...can slow down a Mac noticeably
