I have a Mac Pro from early 2007 (this was from the last line of 32-bit ones), and it stopped booting just the other day after a power outage. When I turn it on, the computer attempts to boot, but doesn’t emit the startup sound. Instead, there is a series of several clicks before I hear the sound of the hard drive attempting to engage. The screen remains black the whole time. (I will note that the clicking noises have actually been manifesting for the past year and a half, well before this occurred, and I’m not sure what they were due to in the first place.) Any idea what’s going on? Did the logic board give out? Thanks in advance for your replies.

The clicking sound is usually the hard drive indexing. Could be a bad drive

Have you tried the standard set of first aid actions?
- PRAM and SMC reset
- Reseating card (memory and video card)
Try to boot from another drive, if you have it.

The fact it is not posting (chimes) is a concern. One user on the Apple forums found the power supply to be bad with this set of symptoms.

Okay, so I tried some things and still couldn’t get the computer to boot. Bought an HD enclosure and stuck my internal in there, and connected it to another computer. Seemed to be making normal sounding hard drive noises, but it wasn’t mounting.

simple thing to do is if you have any OSX installer CD/DVD's stick them in and see if it boots
that will show if it's the drive or not.

sounds like the drive

if you have a second mac you can use that to boot from with target disc mode or use it to make a USB bootble osx drive to test from

Even without a drive the mac should start and show grey screen...
