I know this is a multifaceted issue so I'm not sure I'm posting in the right section, but I'd like to be able to stream PC games to my TV using Boot Camp on my 2008 Mac Pro 3,1, which has a 3.2Ghz Octocore, 32GB 800MHz DDR2 RAM, an HD 5770, and running El Cap/Windows 7 Ultimate dual boot off a 1TB SSD. HDD is not an issue. I have Parallels already installed, but I'm guessing it would be better to use Boot Camp.

1) Is my computer powerful enough to run the latest PC games like the upcoming Battlefront II?
2) If yes, do I just get a Steam Link or something similar to make it work?
3) If no, what needs upgrading to make it work well?

Thanks in advance!

check the requirements of your games and compare it to the hardware of the computer your looking at, same as you do with a windows box.
if you need a x cpu to run game then you need to see if computer has x cpu or faster etc

im going to gess the 3.1 is to slow for most new AAA games

I've got a Steam Link at home to do this, although my system is a 5,1. Typically if your computer can play the game then streaming shouldn't be a problem. Once word of advice is that I would plug an ethernet cable in to everything you can, I found that over wireless it wasn't such a great experience.

Use Bootcamp, gaming in Mac OS is crap compared to Windows.

Not to hijack the OP's thread, but on the subject of Mac Pros and games, are we at the point where games can take advantage of more than 4 physical cores on a regular basis?

Thanks guys! I figured that Boot Camp was the way to go, and I have ethernet available, but can't I use a card that outputs in HDMi and save the extra step of a Steam Link-like device?

ah well you asked about streaming to your TV, if you just want to plug your TV in to the computer then yes just use a cable it will be better.
bootcamp will be faster
the CPU is old and may be a problem
the GPU is vary old and will need replacing

the system requirements are not yet on the origin site https://www.origin.com/gbr/en-us/st...s-battlefront-2/standard-edition#requirements so i cant say if it will run it or not
id gess it will run with a new GPU but not shore how high you will be able to put the settings

tho i did find a video of the 3.1 with a 660TI playing Battlefront 1 so it may work ok
