Please help, my 2008 imac's hard drive recently crashed, and I would like to replace it with an SSD. i have seen companies that sell kits to replace the existing hardrivde with an SSD, wich SSD do i purchce, links would be very helpful. I am also wondering if all the photos and imformation will still be on there. Also will the latest software be able to be ran on the new ssd through patchers? or will it natrualy be there? Also will I be able to recive annual updates like its a brand new computer. One last thing, will it be smooth and fast like a new computer, with the old hardive it would offten freeze when on a zoom call or watching youtube and before it could't run any games. Plsease help me get what I need to make thsi computer great again.

A 2008 iMac is now 14 years old.
An internal SSD will help a little, but you must realize that a 2008 iMac has a 2008-level internal drive bus inside -- it can only go so fast, and no faster.

I don't think it's worth the money. Better to put that money towards a replacement.

Really ... it's time to start thinking about either a new Mac, or at least something used but "more recent".

If you can't buy new, I'd suggest looking for a 2018 Mac Mini, and add a display of your choice.

It does sound like you need a new computer. An SSD in an old iMac is not going to turn that iMac into a new computer. It will still be an old computer, with the same limitations. One thing you could consider is getting a Mini and using the iMac as the display monitor. That way you don't need to buy a new display. Add up the cost of a Mini vs. the cost of replacing the iMac hard drive, then consider the fact that even after you spend that money, you'll still have a 2008-era experience. Then decide if the extra expense to get a truly new computer (a Mini) is worth it to you. You can get a refurbished Mini for $589:
