2008 iMac to 2017 MacBook Air

I have a 2017 MacBook Air and a 2008 iMac. As the iMac cannot be upgraded I need to use the iMac as a monitor. Been doing some research as to whether they can be connected by a Thunderbolt 2 to a Firewire 800 cable but have been getting mixed results. Now really confused. The question is - can I use the iMac as a monitor or not? If so, what cable do I need?

No you can't use the iMac 2008 as a monitor without some serious modification.
