Hey there everyone,

I'm trying to flash my 2009 4,1 to 5,1 but I keep running into this issue with the firmware tool. It says

'This program requires Internet Access. Please connect your Mac Pro to the Internet and Try Again'.

I am connected to the internet. I read that the typical fix was to download the 1.5 2010 Firmware from here: https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1321 and then mount it, but don't click the .pkg. I did that exact process and I get the same error.

Any ideas on how to help?

Thanks!

After following the directions to the letter, I attempted to run the firmware tool; I got the following message:

"This program requires internet access. Please connect your Mac Pro to the internet and try again."

My machine is connected to the internet; thinking that might actually be the problem, I tried running the tool with WiFi and ethernet connections (separately) - no dice. My machine's specs: Mac Pro early 2009 4,1 El Capitan 10.11.6.

I've read of a few instances where this was a problem, but there didn't appear to be any definitive solutions. Any suggestions / feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Had the exact same problem, and it turned out to be a proxy issue with my wi-fi router. I tethered my Mac to my iPhone (personal hotspot) and voila the firmware tool worked perfectly.
Try it, you might be surprised.

Yep... that did the trick! A clever, yet elegant solution; one that I would have never thought of on my own. Thank you so much!

That did it for me. Our IT department has just about everything locked down. My 2009 now thinks it's a 5,1 Mac Pro. Amazing.
