Hello,

Im looking to upgrade the CPUs on my 2009 mac pro again. Do they have to be a matched pair?

I did this long time ago and I don't remember if I bought matched paired.

-Thanks

AFAIK, all you need is the same model and same step. Different model sure won't work, different step on some CPU won't work.

Since you already updated once, I assume you know you need de-lidded CPU, or use the count turn / washer method.

Im looking to upgrade to the X5690. Do they have to be the same step?

I used the 2mm washer trick on my current cpus.

Yes, they need to have the same stepping - but all X5690 have the same stepping. Any pair should work.
