Hi,

a friend of mine has a 2009 21.5" iMac and I recently installed a new SSD inside it and macOS Sierra.

It ran quite good for some time, but now it won't boot (normal mode, safe mode, verbose mode (which goes to GUI again)) and the loading bar just stays at 0% or something. It also does not boot from an external SSD with a fresh copy of Sierra on it, though it shows the option to boot from it when starting the boot selection screen using OPTION.

I also tried Target Disk Mode with my 2009 MBP (which sadly cannot run Sierra) and checked the SSD, which was working fine according to Yosemite Disk Utility.

I tried all the other options like SMC reset and such.

Now I could boot into recovery mode again and try reinstalling the OS onto an empty SSD (using Disk Utility from the installer). Will see how that works.

And while in Recovery Mode the mouse pointer has some "small text" floating beside it. See attached photograph.

Well, I try to get my hands on Snow Leopard 10.6.3 and Yosemite and see if they work better.

Sometimes it would be nice, if Apple offered those versions officially somewhere for easy download.

Well, I got SL installed onto my 2009 MBP, used TDM to clone it to the iMac's internal SSD and now the iMac boots okay (some hiccups).

The iMac did crash (not react to any input, though mouse pointer was moving) after some minutes after the start, but now it seems to have found itself.

I am now trying to install El Capitan from the App Store using an external HDD. Will see how far I get this time.

AHT does not work somehow, but that may be due to the new SSD and no original install media (or maybe not).

I got TechTools 7.x somehow and while its user interface is atrocious, just like the newer version, it did not show me any GPU errors when testing the GPU. The RAM did have some error, but as TT 7.x does not show which error, it is useless anyway. Who writes such stupid software?

Well, I will have lunch now.
