2009 iMac dead...question

wondering if anyone had some thoughts on this. My 2009 imac's display looked funny the other day and I couldn't get it to work. We had to shut it off and when we turns it back on, it needed to be completely restored from backup. It worked for a few hours and then the same thing happened. I'm really busy at work so my wife is in charge of this problem and said she found something about a bad video card in some models from 6-7 years ago. We have a genius appointment on Monday but was just wondering if anyone had any ideas on this problem. TU

Well, its dead. Apple won't fix it because it's vintage. So, if I buy a new one in the fall and it has the new OS on it, can I still set that one up from my last time capsule backup?

You should be able to use the Migration Assistant app to "migrate" all of your documents, apps, user accounts, and settings from your TM backup to the new iMac. Just be careful of app incompatibility with the new OS if you are running a older OS.

My mac is from about 2002. I only use it for a spread sheet that is on it. I can't even print anymore as the new printer is not compatible with the operating version. Today I launched safari and it just kept with the swirling logo thing. When the website loaded it just kept saying my browser was out of date and needed updating due to security flaws. Is it the end of the road for my poor Mac?

Well you can buy new operating system but to be honest it's pre Intel so anything worth having just won't run on it. At 14 years old I'd say it's had its day......

To OP you may be able buy a new/refurb GFX card and fit it.

Some GeForce cards do burn out.
ATI seem more stable so maybe swap for an ATI card if one available for your imac.

My imac has an ATI card, but bought my imac rerufbished with 1 year warranty.

If you can't sure a local computer shop will replace card.

We still fix ibook G4s at my work.
We are a small independant reapir shop.

Insert sad face lol. I look after my things. It still looks like brand new lol. At 4 years old the screen developed a 2 inch white stripe down the middle I was gutted. While on the phone with apple with a problem with an iPhone I mentioned it. The rep took the serial number and it turned out to be from a faulty batch. They gave me reference number and I took it to a local reseller who replaced the screen. How's that for service!

I bought a 2007 imac from macbank (ebay outlet not website) with 1 year warranty for £200.

It runs 10.11.6 no problem.
I did upgrade ram from 2GB to 4GB as was laggy but fine now.
