I have an early 2009 iMac with mavericks and it is beyond due to get replaced just wondering how much more i can get out of this thing. Also been thinking of reformatting it and attempting to get $500 for it on craigslist. (I also have a mbp mid 2012 8gb ram with ssd)

This iMac though i literally have to restart it at least once a day. It'll freeze up when i have safari open with a bunch of tabs and excel. Sometimes ill run another program and after 30min the computer feels like it wants to die. Sometimes it'll free completely and ill have to pull the plug. Everything freezes up to the point where i have to click and quit the program and ill be waiting a minute or more for the drop down menu to pop up so i can click quit. The iMac also gets extremely hot at the top. I can put my palm on it and hold there for 20 seconds but after that i have to take my hand off. Every night when i go to bed i put it to sleep, i have done that for the past 8 years of owning it. If I'm going to be away for more than 2 nights ill shut it down.

The mac still has all the original equipment, 750gb 5400rpm drive with 4gb ram and core 2 duo processor

Replacing the harddrive with ssd, would make it feel like a new machine. Unfortunately it is not meant to be user upgradable, so it requires som work. You can find guides at ifixit.com. Next step would be some more memory. It should be user upgradable and straight forward to do.
