So I've been enjoying the iMac for a little over a year now, and all was going pretty smooth. Well above average panel during that stupid "yellow tinge" hysteria, acceptable HD noise, etc.

There is something that's become a bit of a nuisance however. Some times when the computer is waking up, the optical drive buzzes for maybe 5+ seconds. It's surprisingly loud, it reminds me of the sound your cell phone makes when it vibrates on a hard surface. Take that vibration and make it constant when the thing wakes up, or rarely when it's still asleep you'll hear the HD spin up and the buzz follows shortly after. Kinda annoying when you sleep next to your computer desk :p

So, anybody with experience know how much an optical drive repair would cost? As I said, it's slightly over a year and since everything was going so smooth I didn't extend my Applecare at the end of the term like I planned to. Brilliant move, I know. Not one I plan to repeat next time! If it's not a cheap fix, I can eject the disc whenever it's not in use. Doesn't seem to do it when there's no DVD in there.

Just take the CD out of the drive when you're not using it. Your superdrive isn't broken per se, that is how they work.

So you're saying the loud buzz is typical of the Superdrive? Seems a bit odd, as the buzz isn't there when the drive is actually in use.
