So, I've gutted an 09 iMac 24 inch and used it as a monitor for the last 6-8 months, works great, however, I am getting a little annoyed with the yellow tint and general deterioration of the screen from the backlight.

It's just my media consumption, secondary screen and I've been tweaking the colour temps to reduce the yellow tint but it gets annoying when I'm typing up a document and see the banding.

I considered buying a direct replacement screen (running about £40 for the same panel) but I'll be buying another screen of the same type that's probably going to have the same issue at some point.

I'm wondering if there is a better quality screen available that's compatible with the screw mounts on the iMac chassis? LED?

I know I'll be better off getting a cheapo 1080p monitor, but I like the iMac look lol

If you are sure that the LEDs have gone bad, change them, then.
Parts are dirt cheap, but this is a labour intensive fix.
I use mine in darkmode, therefore the yellow tint is almost undetectable.
I would be more inclined to think the issue is either the actual backlight layers themselves being tinted over time, or the reflective strip near the LEDs which have discoloured. Doubtful the LEDs themselves are bad.

Basically, all of them are aging. You can try increase the brightness to improve it a little bit.

I take that as a no then, lol.

The screen itself is bright enough, and most of the time I don't notice anything, until I open up a website that's got a white background or open up a word doc.

Maybe I'll just leave it alone until it dies

Pretty much so, yeah. It is possible to fix especially if it’s the reflective strip itself. I’ve seen it done a couple times and done it once myself, although for the 21.5” 2009 version. Just need to replace it with a fresh strip of reflective tape, or a strip of anything white.
But the disassembly of iMac LCDs can be a chore.

Thanks for the advice! I looked into backlight replacement and it looks like a chore.

I'll leave it as is.
