Alright, let me break it down for you~
This is what I wanna do...

2009 Mac Mini 2.0, 4gb, 320gb hd.

Also...
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/ministack/

Now this ministack drive has 7200rpm 1.5 TB, 2 fw800, 1fw400, 3 usb, 1 eSATA (won't use it).

I do alot of recording. My macbook which has 120gb and is only a core duo is starting to slow down with Logic, it can't really handle what I am doing. When I add a few plugins I will get the cpu error. My question is... what is the best setup for what I am doing? I am going to be getting a fw audio interface like a DUET or an M-Audio PROFIRE 2626. Something along those lines. What I am having trouble deciding is whats the FASTEST setup, less amount of lag, easiest, etc...

I can do one of the following:

1) Install Logic on MacMini INTERNAL hd, run audio interface straight into mini, save files to the INTERNAL, then move them to the EXTERNAL when I am done mixing...

2) Install Logic on MacMini INTERNAL hd, run audio interface straight into mini, but save files directly to the EXTERNAL... (question with this though is daisy chaining off of the ONE fw800 on the mini... do I use the hub on the ministack? daisy chain off the interface? AHHH grr)

3) Create bootable OS on EXTERNAL hd (running though fw800), Install Logic on the EXTERNAL bootable drive, save all files to the EXTERNAL, and plug the Audio Interface into the fw400 hub built into this stackmini...

sigh... alright. So, I tried to make sense of all of that. Basically I need to know if running logic off the external will work FASTER then running off the INTERNAL, and if the fw800 can handle that, then will it also be able to recognize a firewire audio interface plugged into the hub.... if this risks lag then its not worth it. Basically I just need to know what the most efficient way to run logic studio with this type of setup.

try and picture what I am trying to do if that helps... how would you do it?? All you logic users out there with a mini! HELP ME!

Thanks everyone! I look forward to hearing this play out. I think a lot of budget musicians would be very interested in a set up like this. everyone once to save to an external! but only one dang fw800... APPLE! curse you!

I believe the hard drive on your Mac Mini is 5400rpm correct? If so, you're better off recording directly to the faster external drive, and running Logic on the Internal drive.

I've got a similar set-up running on my Macbook Pro with Pro Tools. The best way to chain it would be from your Mini into the external drive with fw800. Then from the external drive to your interface, probably with a fw800-fw400 cable.

Hope this helps.
