2009 Mac Mini 2nd Hard drive

I setting a a used mac mini as a home server and wanted to add a 2nd internal hard drive. I was going to ditch the optical drive. Will a 2 tb 2.5 in drive work in the 2009 model? Or should I go with externals.

You'll only be able to use a laptop sized 2.5" 9mm tall drive in it.
