Did a little cleaning on my server and am perplexed at what this could be. Figured I post here to see if anyone else has experienced this before.

There's an odd almost greasy like material on the processor board. No corrosion anywhere and the computer runs fine. I'm pretty sure this model doesn't have liquid cooling so I'm not totally sure what, if anything would be leaking.

It's a 2009 2.66 quad-core.

The oily residue is heatsink thermal pad degradation, quite common at this point in time. You can clean everything with IPA and replace the thermal pads. There is a thread about the correct thermal pad to buy.

Or you can drink the IPA and ignore the stain.

Nooooooo to IPA ... we use Spotted Cow in my neck of the woods !

India Pale Ale ... meet Farmhouse Ale ! 😍

Every out of stater gets a 6 pack on the house ! ( They can't get it legally back home , anyways ... ) .

Worth the drive !

Teetotalers get instead Point Soda ... made in a brewery , of course . Where else ?

I almost forgot ...

OP - yes , that residue is harmless . It's denatured thermal gap material from the CPU Heatsink and every cMP CPU Tray has some .

I pour some high purity isopropyl alcohol on the PCB and rub it with a clean bristle brush and cotton swabs .

Be careful not to knock off any SMCs , so use very gentle force .

Let everything dry completely before powering the Tray up again .

LOL

I note that a recommended food pairing for Spotted Cow is "bacon and eggs". Good to know if you need an ale with breakfast! Cheeseheads!

Here, however, we go for the Maximus. https://lagunitas.com/beer/maximus

Really , Aiden . Those are recommendations . Not requirements . Geesh . I thought everyone knew that ! 🙄 .

Besides , it helps with the hangovers from midnight New York Style pizza and something adult beveragey .

Gosh , I wish my state had decent pizza . The tin plated taste of the tomato sauce here is enough to drive a man to the bottle ...

The more typical "recommended pairings" that I see are things like "coq au vin goes well with this 2009 Pinot Noir", not "bacon and eggs go well with this beer". ;)

Cheeseheads!
