Question - Will 2010 mac pro tray with w3690 CPU work in flashed 2009 Mac Pro?

I'm looking to buy upgraded tray and one seller is telling me that tray from 2010 mac pro will not work in 2009 Mac Pro. is that the case?

If a seller tell you that it won't work, then most likely it's the truth. Even the most untrustable seller on the world won't lie in this way ;)

Some things that people say have been explained a thousand times are just the thing that benefits from an explanation because, often, they are the very thing that someone else is quietly looking for any information they can find. The plug on the motherboard is the same and the pinouts are the same. The problem is that the firmware on the motherboard and the daughterboards of the 2010 and up cMP is different than 2009 (itself, different than previous cMP versions). Thus, even though it would make perfect sense to use parts designed around lidded rather than de-lidded processors, short of changing the motherboard and the daughterboard for 2010 and up, one cannot. I have yet to come across a more detailed and/or technically more sophisticated explanation but the search goes on in as much as once, there was no boot rom update and no one thought THAT could be done.

While I am at this, to the person that made that possible, thank you; it can never be said enough.

In so far as the heat sinks, I have yet to see any evidence of hardware incompatibility in so far as fan plugs etc... however, the structure is sufficiently different that even though the parts would seem identical, using them on a 2009 daughterboard so as to use lidded processors without washers etc... would not have seem to have been done successfully --at least, I have not come across any articles or write-ups claiming success. One would think that someone, successful at something that so many have done in some other way, would shout it out into the wind.

if you plug a 4,1 cpu tray in to 5,1 (i think) it will work but the fans will run at 100% all the time.
so yes but you wont like it.

but i may be wrong that's only from memory from here, i have never tried it.

I tried it going both ways! 2009 and 2010 Trays are interchangeable, BUT, like you said, Fans run at 100% and even the fan utilities cannot make them go slower. VERY ANNOYING!!!
