Ok folks but does anyone know if there are possible aftermarket flash memory upgrade for the 11.6 in air? Also is there an estimated time when they ship? Just curious cause I am debating getting the 64gig model and upgrading later...

No one knows for certain. PhotoFast has publicized a possible upgrade with no specs or details. Toshiba is selling the 256 GB SSD used in the 13" MBA, but it's not clear that it will fit in the 11" model. So the bottom line is that there is nothing definite on the horizon.

Yes. The SSD is just help by one screw

Photofast and Toshiba have announced 256GB "blade" SSDs but availability and prices are unknown.

It's not clear that the 256 GB will fit. The thickness of the 256 blade is twice the thickness of the 64 and 128 GB blades due to placing memory chips on both sides of the card. So it is unclear whether it will be too thick for the 11.6" model.

+1

We know the SSD is replaceable and that while the chosen format is new, it looks like Toshiba (the OEM) will be selling them and that others plan to offer that type is SSD.

So going from 64gb to 128gb is definitely possible, although not sure the price or hassle get you much buying a low spec model then upgrading.

But currently the 256gb SSD are double sided (thicker than the single sided 128gb ones we know fit) and no one knows if they will fit in an 11.6" MBA.

So I would not count on it but if that format of SSD becomes common, it's possible at some point in the future as memory densities continue to increase (or someone finds a way to put an existing 256gb in).

For the time being, an HDD upgrade for the MBA will be quite expensive, once/if they will be available.
And the HDD you remove will be worthless.

This might be the only time Apple is offering a factory harddrive upgrade at a fair price, take it while it lasts . ;)

Yes and no. The extracted HDD could likely go into a casing to make a faster than average external HDD. Of course, this would make more sense with USB3 onboard.

Ah ok look like I should get the 128 then since it'll be a while before more storage will come out!

Regardless of if it fits now, I'm sure they will make a 256GB blade with chips only on one side in the future when it becomes cheap enough to do so. Either way, 11" MBA owners will eventually get 256GB and larger upgrades,

This is my hope as I am in the MBA 11" future owner camp.

That's what I did. I would have loved to have 256G but I got 128G since it is not immediately upgradable. By the time someone sells a 256G upgrade Apple may have a an upgraded MBA model that includes other improvements (making me think twice about just a SSD upgrade). Until then, I want the most I can currently buy...128G in the 11.6" 'Ultimate'
