...It needs memory and an OS. I suspect the disk was removed and replaced with a blank 1TB drive. It will do primarily email, web, Pages and Numbers.

We own a bunch of Macs sharing an iCloud account but I'll have to buy a copy of Sierra won't I? I only see upgrade options on the applestore.

It's from a family from our small school so I can go back to them if there's a problem - it's not a random eBay guy. The Mac + 16g memory from OWC will cost $370, plus the cost of the OS. Is this a good deal?

There's no cost to the OS. Do you have access to another Mac? You can just download sierra through the app store and use any of many diskmaker tools to make a bootable drive. All legal, all free, Apple hasn't cared to sell the OS for a long time.

Throw an SSD in there and it should be pretty peppy!
