Ive got a 2010 iMac, 2.8 ghz, 512ssd, 14gb ram and an external 24 monitor. I want to replace the 24 with a 4K 27, which the iMac can't drive. (Need the iMac to last another year or two, but have 4K opportunity.)

Is there any kind of external adaptor that would enable me to run a 4K external monitor?

No.
(the answer is that simple)

If you really want 4k, you need newer hardware.
(again, the answer is that simple)

You -could- buy a 4k display now, BUT, it will display only lower (scaled) resolutions if connected to the 2010 iMac.
But… I'd "hold off" on buying a 4k display UNTIL you have a Mac that can support it.
Reason: between "now" and "then", the number of available displays will probably grow much larger -- and cheaper.
