connected to 24" ACD:
52 deg = 3500rpm fan
67 deg = 6000rpm+ fan

notebook standalone:
52 deg = 2000rpm (pretty much idle, can't hear it)
67 deg = 2100rpm, just beginning to rev above idle

what gives??????????????????????????

fan noise is a big deal to me when I study!!! Even with a couple small apps running, mem usage 20% & cpu usage almost idle, the fan is kicking....WTF!!

First, when you use an external display, the video card will also get hotter, not only the main processor.

Also, are you using it in clamshell mode? The MBA's keyboard isn't sealed (that's why I think it doesn't have a backlit keyboard). If you pay attention, you'll notice that most of the sound of the speakers come from below the keys. Hot air also "escapes" through the keys.

I would check the video card temp. I think iStat is capable of that. My best guess is that pushing the extra pixels is building more heat on the video card.
