Hi.

I bought a 2nd hand 2010 Mac Mini that came with an issue were the fan was on 100%. I knew about the issue as the seller told me to download a MacOS fan control program (which worked well). Anyway I decided to try and fix the issue as I wanted to replace the 500GB mechanical with an SSD so I bought another fan control cable from Aliexpress.

So last week I installed the new SSD and replaced one missing cable so there are now two fan temperature cables attached to the SSD.

Unfortunately this has made no difference as the fan is still going at 100%.

Has anyone got any ideas why this might be?

Have you actually checked the temperatures being reported by the system?
I’m pretty sure there’s at least a couple more wires sensors; one is the bay#2 / optical, and the other probably the heatsink? (or just internal / board temp)

It could easily be that the thermal paste on the CPU simply needs replacing, or one of the existing sensors is faulty; but you won’t know until you check the temperatures are actually correct.

Having said that; assuming you’ve disable the fan utility; are you sure it’s handed control back over to the system, and not just set a permanent speed?

Hi.

These two cables are just for the HD. These two temp sensors don't have anything to do with the CPU. I have use the Mini with a fan control program and the CPU temp is fine.

What I am trying to find out is if the original Mac Mini HD is a proprietory job and the cables only work on this HD. But reading around the internet other people have replaced the original HD with an SSD and the fan has worked as normal.

Directly addressing the last part: I’ve replaced the original HDD on my 2010 mini with a SSD, and simply stuck the temperature sensors in a similar location in the replacement.
I don’t actually recall which plugged in where, but IIRC there was one unused socket on the mobo. Also related is that there is another identical sensor taped to the optical drive for the second bay.

The only reason I asked about other temperatures is because I can see around a dozen different readings, and the single fan will have to keep all of them in check.
