Hello all, I have lurked here since my purchase of a 2009 Mac Pro last year and this forum has always been a big help. I've now registered to get the help of the community for a problem I'm having with a 2010 Mac Pro I purchased for very cheap. Previous owner said they took it to a computer shop and it was found to have a bad power supply.

Here's the situation... I have tried 3 power supplies, one known good, one on its way out (buzzing), and the one that came in this Mac Pro with a known good power cable. All produce the same result, once plugging in the computer tries to switch on (without pressing the power button) and immediately shuts off, I'm talking a split second of power.

LEDs show OVTMP CPU1 & OVTMP CPU2 when plugging and unplugging AC power and 5V STBY when pressing the DIAG button. I have changed the BR2032 battery, I've followed the Service manual up to the point of jumping SYS_PWR where jumping the leads has no effect, leading me to believe it might be the backplane board. I have also tried installing the processor board from my 2009, thinking the tray could be the issue.

I dealt with a dead backplane with my 2009, but this seems to be a different issue as the OVTMP LEDs still light up...

Has anyone seen this issue? Any ideas or insight would be greatly appreciated thanks :)

Start eliminating any other possible defective parts to confirm that it's a defective backplane, test the PSU and CPU tray with your working Mac Pro. Look for damage cables, inspect every connections.
