2010 Mac Pro - Video Card Options

HI All,



I recently purchased a used 2010 Mac Pro tower. It comes with Intel Xeon Quad-Core 2.8GHz, 14GB RAM, 5.5TB HD, ATI 5770 Graphics.



I also want to confirm that I can indeed install OSX Yosemite? I looked and everything said 2010 models will have no problem with Yosemite.





Now the main reason for the Purchase was because my 27" imac is starting to bog down, so i decided that i will reformat it and make it a secondary station to do miscellaneous things on it.



I plan to really to do heavy gaming (CS:go, WOW, League of Legends, Dota 2, Civilizations) and many other games that i plan to run at the nearly the highest Graphic option possible.



What is the best options for a compatible card that I can run? I have looked around the forums, but everything seems out-dated by a couple of years.



So far I have looked at the following options, i am open to the highest performance to mid-range depending on price





1. Nvidia GeForce GTX 680
2. Radeon Sapphire HD 7950




Are there newer better options available? Also would it better to run 2 7950's instead of getting one high end card?

I did and now i see the GTX 980, i just did quick google searches

MacVidCards offers also higher end GPUs, depends in your budget. Google more and see ;-)

if you see yourself getting 4K screen for high end gaming, 980Ti/ Titan X have no equal, esp not in OSX.

Yeah, I dont plan on dropping that much, $350-$450 is a good range for me it will seem. Looking at the 770 and 680

I think you'll be happy with either of those. I got a 7970 from MVC, which I use to power a 30" ACD 2440*1600 monitor. I can generally run any of the games on high settings. I think the 680 is a better gaming card than the 7970.

btw, you picked an awesome computer for upgrading. There are lots of threads in these forums on how to do it...

Awesome! Yeah, I'm about 5 years newish to macs. My first was the 27" iMac which has been running strong since 09". But it's starting to slow down and it runs so damn hot I can cook bacon on it. Going to use that as a second one.

Excited to receive this unit and start upgrading, I love how far they've come.
