I have a 2010 Mac Pro with a 2.8 GHz processor and 16 GB RAM. Each of the 4 drive bays have a regular hard drive in it. In the optical bay, I have a 120 GB Mercury 6G flash drive.

I got it because I had been reading so much about how much faster SSD drives are. Imagine my surprise when I don't notice a huge increase in performance from it.

I finally got Blackmagic disk tester and compared the SSD to one of my hard drives. Here is the hard drive:

Why is the SSD so slow? Isn't it supposed to be many times faster than a hard drive?

Don't forget that you're on SATA II 3gb/s speeds in the cMP

However, with a Crucial M4 in my standard MP hard disk bay, I get around
230/250 write/read speeds.

So, something is not right about your setup !

Simply put, Blackmagic test is quite meaningless for Sandforce-based SSDs as explained in this thread.

Thanks for that - good to know :)

I believe you should be seeing 250 or better. EDIT: how did you set it up ?
It's connected to the SATA connector in the optical bay.

Well, I figured that. I'm just wondering what it is that's wrong. I'm probably just going to repurpose the SDD for my next gaming PC build, so it's not a big deal, just wondering if I missed something obvious.

I get about 260 mb/sek in Read and 120 mb/sek in Write from my Intel X25M 160 GB disc in the hard drive bay.
That is just a comparison, so hope it can help a bit.

If your SSD is on a sled or in the optical bay, you are limited by the Mac Pro drive controller which is @ SATA2 3GB/s even if your SSD is 6GB/s.

You should get a Velocity Solo x2. This will maximize the speed of your SSD to SATA3. Your scores will most likely almost double.

why am i so much faster

I have an 840 Evo 1gb ssd in a Mac 3,1 using icy dock. I am getting 258MB/s write and 268MB/s read.
