Hi all,

I just purchased a new 13 inch macbook air with the 1.86 ghz processor , 2 gb of ram and a 128 gb ssd. It is currently being delivered to me through UPS but I am worried if this new generation is plagued by the infamous "Hinge issue" that the 2008 model had.

Can anyone comment on the hinge structure of the new model and if it will last at least 3 years without hinge problems ?

Thanks

Apple has a repair extension program on the machines with the hinge issues, so apple covers the repair, even if the machine is out of warranty. Additionally, they changed the hinge tension on the replacement screens, so even the infamous model doesn't have hinge issues anymore.

You don't have to worry about the hinges simply because a previous model had issues. On top of that, it's a complete redesign. That's more like saying, "oh no, the MacBook Air had hinge issues. Do I need to worry about my 17" MacBook Pro??" The only relevant thing they in common is that they have hinges.

Completely different hinge. And the 2010 just came out. No one knows if it will last 3 years or not.

Totally different design on new models. I don't think it'll be an issue; Apple wouldn't make that mistake twice in a row.

I don't know anything about the infrastructure of the hinges, but I got my air on Monday and the hinges are fine: Not too tight and not too loose. You should be fine and the worst case scenario is that you have to return it, but I wouldn't worry. I have not heard about any issues of the hinges on the new macbook air models, granted there are bound to be defective models.
