2010 Macbook Pro running Yosemite DP5 crashing

Anyone else running Yosemite DP5 on a 2010 15" Macbook Pro and getting random crashes and GPU kernel panics?

I took mine to Apple a week ago and they did not find any hardware issues. I haven't had a GPU kernel panic since, but my computer shut down randomly a few minutes ago, when I was switching to safari.

Anyone else?

Yosemite is a beta product.

I'm afraid that if you insist on running software that is not ready for distribution you have to expect bugs. T
he whole point of apple allowing people to download Yosemite is for these bugs to be highlighted so the issues can be fixed before release.
I reccomend you reinstall mavericks and wait for the finished software to be released before updating.

I may have had one kernel panic with Mavericks, but I have at least 3 or 4 a week now with Yosemite Beta

It could be stressing the GPU causing the fault to present its ugly self more often. Try to get it repaired at Apple.

Turn off the integrated GPU in Mavericks and see if it crashes. If it does you will not be able to turn it back on because the integrated GPU will be turned off at reboot. Do this at your own risk!

System Prefs>Energy Saver>Automatic Graphics Switching (deselect)

Hate to tell you but "Radeongate" can strike at any time and not show on tests. Both my Early 2011 15" MBP and Mid-2012 Retina had the same issue. Passed with flying colors, but the KPs backed up my statements that it was the discreet GPU. Plus the fact it couldn't even draw my desktop proved it too.

Do you have an Apple Store nearby? Take it to them and have them look at it.

Already took it to apple. They took it over night for diagnostics and ended up finding no hardware issues. However if this continues I will surely be bringing it back, this thing needs to hold up tip next year when Broadwell comes out.

Of course, the diagnostics they run in front of you at the Genius Bar never find anything. When my GPU failed in both my early 2011 MBP and mid 2012 rMBP it never showed on that test. What did show up though? The Kernel Panics. Those proved that when OS X tried to kick the discreet GPU in it would fail miserably in one of two ways; lock up, distort the video, KP, and refuse to reboot (it would get stuck at the Apple with a frozen pin wheel) or just cause video distortion requiring a reboot.

I'd get this issue fixed now. When was the laptop bought? You may be outside the warranty period however Apple might still fix it for free. Keep pressing two key pieces of evidence, the KP and the fact they have a Repair Extension (REP) on this model of machine. Also, if you could get a video of the issue happening that would help even more.

This was a video I made and showed to the Geniuses when I took my laptop in. This was the rMBP. It showed them what was going on, and I highly recommend you do the same before going back. It doesn't even have to be fancy, I filmed, edited, and uploaded that from my iPhone.

Thunderbolt Software Update v1.0 for OS X 10.6.8 installed this driver. The driver exists also in newer versions of OS X. As far as i know they did not update the AppleMuxControl code in OS X releases after v10.6.8.

It is certainly not a hardware-related problem.

When it goes to kick in the discreet GPU, it has to load a kernel extension as well as the nVIDIA driver for the GPU. When these things load (typically at the blink of an eye) they contact the GPU. If the GPU is having issues; a damaged die, can't process correctly, solder becoming disconnected from the logic board, etc, the kernel extension and driver can't/won't load. What does this do? It causes the Kernel to Panic.

Don't believe me? Just look at the Kernel Extensions in the backtrace. They all have to do with the discreet GPU not responding. The IO Bus it in there too because the GPU is hooked into a PCIe bus of the computer. Yes, the MBP has a built in PCIe bus. Its all in System Profiler/System Information.

I'd go back to the store, and tell them it keeps happening. If the Geniuses won't do anything, speak to the manager. Tell them you know that this machine is under a REP (Repair Extension Program). Show them a copy of every single kernel panic relating to the GPU. Print them all out from Console and go down there with an appointment.

If you really want to find out, turn off the integrated Intel GPU with the steps I gave you and see if it crashes instantly. Try at your own risk!
