Hi All,

I have been offered a refurbished 2009 at a fantastic price, i was wondering if i can drop in a 2010 processor (W3565 Quad 3.2). I know the hex core will not play but I'm not sure about the quad core.

All help appreciated :)

the single core 2009 has a quad 2.66 w3520 or a quad 2.93 w3540 so as long as you are talking single core

any w3500 series should work including the w3565

I am more then 90 percent sure so wait for a few more guys to chime in on it. the w3565 is the low cost 3.2 quad lists at 294 on intels site. the best price on ebay is this:

353 and a real company is the seller .

if you sell your quad chip you should do okay the quad 2.66 is getting about 200 the 2.93 gets about 250 on ebay.

my quad 2.80 got 199 on ebay. going from the 2.66 to the 3.2 should get you to 11000 on geekbench from 8800

Ya, I recently sold my w3520 for $200 on Ebay. I dropped in a w3570 easily. This CPU is the best deal if you are looking to upgrade. The w3580 is .13ghz faster but not worth the $150-200 more.

Wouldn't the W3565 be WAY better than the W3570? I see the W3565 3.2Ghz for $300 and the W3570, also 3.2Ghz, for $850.

There's some small differences. Specifically, the QPI (6.4GT/s v. 4.8GT/s; W3570 & W3565 respectively) and memory bandwidth (32GB/s v. 25.6GB/s due to the W3570 supporting 1333MHz memory). Now whether or not this matters, is up to the user (but it's not going to affect that many, given there's not that much software that's truly n core multi-threaded).

Take a look at the comparison between the two.

Don't forget the 09 models are limited to 1066MHz memory. The QPI speed difference is negligible from the benchmarks I've seen comparing the two.

Good point (this issue slipped my mind).

This particular factor in the 2009's renders the memory bandwidth increase (1333MHz support) in the W3570 moot. Not so in a 2010 though, and could be a cheap upgrade later (faster clock).

But even if the system's capable, most software can't utilize it anyway (rare exception here and there).

for his machine the lower cost one is the better deal (w3565) if his machine had the 2.66 he will get a good boost for very little cost. I am factoring the sale of the 2.66 as 200 maybe 180 on ebay.

Definitely a great deal!!

Just checked out ebay... some great deals out of asia on the w3580:

$450 http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-INTEL-XEON-...56?pt=CPUs&hash=item3366aba390#ht_1153wt_1064

$565 http://cgi.ebay.com/Intel-Xeon-W358...-D0-/270732089576?pt=CPUs&hash=item3f08e3d8e8

Considering Ebay's buyer protection policy and the seller's ratings... Not a bad deal.
