Well I got the parts yesterday and installed them.
Memory from 4 GB to 8 GB.
Hard Drive from 750 GB to 1.0 TB
Hopefully that will be all I need.
Now to move the data over to it and get to work !!!!

I did see one anomaly right after the install that made me thing it was a memory problem due to new ram maybe being bad.

Ok here is the anomaly I experienced ....

OK here is the best description I can give.

With LION freshly installed and an external HDD drive connected via USB, I attempted to copy an item from the HDD to the new drive in the MBP. I clicked and dragged the item from the external HDD to the internal HDD.

The ICON kind of froze, and it did not appear as if the item copied over.

I logged out and logged back in and the display looked normal and the item was copied.

I also noticed that when I attempted to click on what is best described as a 'ghost' of the icon nothing occurred. Even though I could see the icon, it was as if it were not there.

And this is worthy of a thread...why?

I was actually in the process of describing the anomaly when I hit the SUBMIT button prematurely.

But hey .... THANK YOU for your creative and helpful input! :D

Nice try at covering up, but if you hit SUBMIT prematurely, why didn't you just go back and edit your original post right away instead of waiting 28 minutes?

His "creative and helpful input" was just as creative and helpful as your original post.

So you have nothing to add in reference to the problem noted, and felt compelled to add nothing at all.

Thanks for your input sir!

Well, what exactly is there to add? Your original post stated you did a bunch of upgrades and experienced some kind of anomaly without clarifying what it was. OK...and?

And then, in your followup post, you gave more details. OK...and?

This thread is one big fail.

Here's my contribution:
Why in the world would you log out while there's a copy process going on instead of waiting?

Because the copy process was was taking way too long.
There is no way it should take as long as it did to copy a small file.
I've copied larger files over in less time.

I got no Beach Ball, just the normal cursor throughout the test.

How long do you suggest I wait? First occurrence I walked away and came back 5 minutes later. Second occurrence I think I waited 3 minutes.

As it turns out the copy process was completed, but for some reason it was not being shown as such on the screen.

Keep in mind this was after the new RAM was installed, so that was suspect.

Since my last post we have duplicated it twice.

New RAM pulled, running on old RAM and testing it now.

If it occurs with the old RAM, I'll take it to Apple.

If it does not occur with the old RAM, I'll send the new stuff back for replacement.

Well...you're using USB 2.0. There's a drive spin-up time as well, and drive kext identification, etc. when you first plug in a device to a computer. So yes, I'd wait longer.

Also, if you already found out what the problem is, why are you even asking for help? MR Forums isn't your personal diary, you know.

You wait at least 10 hours, because you're using USB 2.0 to copy at least 200GB of data...

Perhaps you missed the part where I said we were transferring " an item "?

Who said anything about 200 GB ?

Aside from the fact that when copying massive amounts like that it tells you how long the copy is estimated to take.

I thought you were restoring from backup at the time :V read the edit.

No, all I wanted to do was copy an file from an external HHD to the internal HDD.

Actually here is the file size - 5,836 bytes (8 KB on disk)

Just wanted to move the exported Safari Bookmarks file and it hung on that.

If I need to move massive amounts of data I use FW800.

Here is a better description ( maybe )

On the desktop I have two windows open ....

Window #1: EXT HDD/Document
Window #2: INTERNAL HDD/Documents

I clicked on the file in Window #1 and dragged it over to Window #2

All looked well until I ' dropped ' the file into Window #2

When I closed both windows the files icon remained on the desktop as if it copied to the desktop.

I tried to click on the file on the desktop but nothing happened.

Then I went into View/Arrange/By Name expecting the file icon to line up along the side of the desktop ... but it just stayed put.

Well I really have not found out for certain where the problem is.

It just repeated with the old RAM.

So it is not the RAM. Video Card maybe?

I guess coming here for ideas was not the best of ideas.

My mistake for thinking I might get some help since Apple Store is closed.

Good Night! ;)

lol I dont trust 1TB HDDs that much since I hear alot of story of them failing.
Id rather stay with the 750GB or if 1TB SSD becomes affordable, I might buy it.

I have heard of some 7200 RPM 1 TB drives failing, the 5400 RPM units seem to do fine.

But this isn't a drive related issue, and it now appears in original configuration and upgraded configuration so it's nothing I can do hear.

It's going back to Apple today.

Problem Resolved: Got a replacement MBP yesterday.

Thank You Apple!

Thank you to those who helped keep this thread going by adding nothing of substance to it at all. I am sure there is a name or word that describes you!
