I was looking to get either a Samsung or WD 1 TB HDD but I am concerned that the drives will not fit in the new 2011 Base Mini, has anyone been able to install one of these drives without modifying the chassis.

easy peasy just get the right samsung. I did one and ordered some more samsung hdds today from this seller on ebay

note to mods this item is no longer for sale. I just posted it to show the op that this is an easy mod.

Which drive is better, the Samsung or WD?

I've had both. Only ever had a WD go and contacted them for an RMA. I was pretty disappointed with their customer service. They sent me a new drive using the slowest shipping possible. Came from Ontario (I live in BC) and took 9 days. It was a backup drive, but still, they didn't know that. You'd expect them to be a little more concerned with your uptime than that.

I had to ship the old unit back at my expense. Cost me about $12 CAD, which is a substantial charge in comparison for what some drives retail for (they were also offering an upgrade program where I could swap the drive for higher capacity for $49.99 CAD, it was tempting.

This coming from the experiences I've had with Apple repair, where they overnighted batteries to me, took back my headphones, etc. and I didn't have to pay a dime. A DHL guy would show up, I would get the new product, and throw the old product in the given envelope and call a delivery guy for pick up... maybe they've spoiled me.

In any case, I am far more hesitant to deal with WD (and I've always traditionally relied on them over any other manufacturer for HDs). I've never dealt with Samsung so they could be just as bad (or worse).

wd service is better in usa. 6 bucks to return the drive.
they print the label for ups.
I am east coast they are west coast takes about 10 days for replacement.
They used to be very good with lack of paperwork on bad drives.
you only needed the drive to get a replacement.
this year they changed that requirement.
I guess they were getting burned on returns.

Interesting. I had the exact opposite experience! Called WD to replace my external 1tb, they shipped it overnight, shipped me a better 2TB version in one of those dual drive enclosures. I ended up figuring out why my 1tb was acting up (i was using a lower power supply from another device, drive wouldnt spin up) and the 2tb had a powersaving feature where the drive would spin down after about an hour, causing any data being written/read from it to be corrupt. I returned the new drive at their expense.

As for apple, i went to replace my trackpad. They didnt have any in stock, had me wait for a week for them to receive the one they ordered, then I went in for my second appointment and the only one they ordered was broken, had to wait another week to get another one.
