they pair fine with my iPhone and iPad and the instructions say that with iCloud it should mean my mac can see them automatically but it can't. I've tried manually holding the button down on the headphones to see if that makes them appear, and turned bluetooth off and on on mac but no dice.

bluetooth works though on the mac, its paired with my keyboard fine and I've used it to send files to nokia phone and it can see my tv on the list too.
 
Pairing via iCloud works only with Bluetooth Low Energy devices. If you don't upgrade the internal BT/WiFi card in your Mac, you don't have the required hardware.
