I’m planning on upgrading my 2011 27” iMac (2.7ghz i5) to make it last just a little bit longer by putting in a new CPU and GPU. As far as the GPU goes the thread here on MacRumors has given me pretty much all the info I need, but when it comes to the CPU there’s one thing that I’m wondering about. As far as I can tell a lot of people have had success in switching the CPU for one that Apple used in another configuration that was available at the time, but from all the threads I’ve rifled through I still haven’t figured one thing out.

My current processor is a i5 2500S with a TDP of 65w. The one I would be changing it for is a i7 2600 with a TDP of 95w. Would this be an issue? As far as I can tell all the 27” iMacs from 2011 used the same logic board and PSU, which I interpret as meaning the change in TDP wouldn’t be a problem. Still I’ve managed to find a lot of people saying that the new processor has to have the same TDP as the one I’m replacing for it to work. Maybe this is only in regards to the 21” version that had a weaker PSU, but people fail to specify this in the threads that I’ve found. Does anyone know what the deal is with TDP in this regard?

Thanks in advance.
