tried to turn on my 2011 21.5 imac today and it won't turn on... completely dead,

I suppose i just need to return it to the store i bought it from.... not good

To add insult to injury my backup drive was RMA's last friday :(

Another common cause of this is a confused SMC. Fortunately, this is easy to fix. Unplug the Mac from the power outlet. Hold down the power button on the back for 5 seconds, then plug the Mac back in. Does it boot after doing this?

I tried all the fix's suggested in the apple support forums , to no avail.

Returned it to my supplier who said I might be 3 weeks before i get it back from apple..

Oh Great, had it 14 days and lose it for 21 days... Not Happy :(

Don't accept a repair, just ask for a replacement machine and be done with it.

Do you have an AASP (Apple-Authorized Service Provider) in your area? I don't mean the big Apple Stores but one of those inconspicuous little shops that existed long before Apple's own retail chain. Many of them do repairs themselves rather than just sending the machines to Apple. Had my old MBP's mainboard swapped in less than 24hrs once.

Not a good idea if the data on the iMac is the only backup. If not: Go for it!

Who's your supplier? In the UK you'd be entitled to a new one if it was less than 28 days old.

I am in Spain, was told there was only a 7 day exchange period

I did want to email apple and ask them but couldn't find an email address just phone numbers... not helpful when you don't speak the lingo!

I've seen you're thread on Apple forums. Good luck.

Tried to get the iMac back so i could take it to a repair center myself, they told me it had already been dispatched and they would phone me in 3-4 weeks when it's been returned.

One of the things that persuaded me to swap to Apple was the supposed high level of support.... absolutely no evidence of it here :(

I really can't express at how bad I feel about this, had the machine 2 weeks and now I am left with nothing for the next 4 weeks. As a fulltime writer/blogger it's inconvenient to say the least.

I'd say apples is the best customer service of any company. Comet have crappy insurance policies. It's just unfortunate you live in an area that is a distance away from any authorised repair centres/apple stores.

Do you have a second computer.

One thing to note is that Apple can often beat those service deadlines. I've been quoted repair times of 3-5 days and have received my repair back in less than 48 hours.

I'm not in Spain, so obviously your milage may vary, but Apple tends to overestimate the repair times. It's better to get your iMac back early than to get it back late. :)
