I am upgrading my 2011 iMac to a SSD drive, and seen a post somewhere about a temp sensor? Something about the fans will run on high if you do not get a special cable with a temp sensor in it to stick on the SSD?

I am ordering all the stuff I need today to swap the drive, can anyone shed some light on this temp sensor thing for me?

hi this is the solution no noisy fan and this form the power on :) enjoy :)
you have to make a connexion between pin 11 and 12
photos are for example, it depends how the easiest way is, and if this is SSD or HDD

Ok, so I installed the new SSD, and installed the fan control software. Where is the software getting the temp reading for the SSD? System related? Also, what is the usual temps and fan speeds for the 2011 iMac? Just want to make sure that the software is the option for the long run, I don't mind buying the temp sensor if its a better route to go.

Set the speed/temp for whatever you're comfortable with.

I have mine fairly aggressive so the fans are at 95% at 140F and that's about as hot as it ever gets. The cpu is fine at 175 but I like to keep the psu cool as well.

Fwiw the hdd fan seems to make the most noise with the least contribution to cooling so maybe cap it at 75%.

Press the “SMART” button on the left.
Done deal.

SMART value is read by the SSD internally. It literally has a thermometer (die) built in.
