In the last month my mac mini i5 2011 base modal with8gb ram has been noticeably slower. Come home the other night to find it booted into recovery mode. Ran the Apple Hardwear test and low and behold a 4hdd error which is apparently the Hdd. The kicker is its 3 days out warranty, just booked a genius so hopefully they take pity.

Anyone else had hard drive failure stories?

I hope they have pity too, because that sucks. And yes, the HDD on my 2009 iMac failed but since I bought AppleCare, they sent someone to my house and they fixed it there. It was awesome.

The thing you're going to find though, if the Geniuses are akin pity on you and replace the HDD, they're only going to replace it with one the same capacity.

So if you had thoughts of upgrading the HDD to a high capacity drive, this is a good time to do it. And if they are not taking pity on you, then ask them which drives they would recommend and then go and get one.

No pity, no case by case basis, just stuck to the company line. 3 f%#king days! There is certainly no grey area sometimes.

Trying to fight it but don't expect to get anywhere.

Pretty pissed off really.
