Thank you for all your feedback guys, I have gone with a Macbook Air 13" 1.7GHz i5/4GB/256GB for now, Sold my Macbook Pro for a good return and saved some extra cash for my future purchase of iPad 3....since I can't really afford one right now. I am loving this Macbook Air.

Unless your looking for a reason to go in on an iPad, than I don't see much other benefit, as the MBP is much more powerful than an ipad and the mini is almost exactly the same spec-wise.

Not saying you shouldn't go for it, but the only major "gain" would be having an ipad. Personally, I would much rather have a MBP to bring to class instead of my ipad, since it has a built in keyboard (which is needed for any serious use besides games and such) and can multitask.

Also, the end of your post referring to "smart" comments, is almost always put up from people who are mad when forum users wont justify a purchase for them. :)

Good luck.

thanks, but i also showed link to keyboard case....to get more input, i do appreciate your response and as for my last words no its not that I don't get a response and nor am I mad but this forum honestly have a lot of d*ckheads who jus come in n start unrelated nonsense....I spend a good amount of time on the forum to notice it....so I was giving them a heads up that I have no interest in hearing or discussing it, btw I have always gotten a justifiable response with almost all my threads

PS sry link had stopped working so I updated the link for the keyboard...u should check it out...its definitely something u haven't seen before...

that is possible. As a matter of fact at my company the consultants get away with using an iPad only.

It actually only depends on what YOU need to do. :)

My honest recommendation would be to take some time and write down everything you need to do on the iPad (and on the mini).

Then I would research if everything is possible.
If it is then go ahead, but be aware that the iOS device is not as flexible as OSX.

Hope this helps.:)

Thanks for the reply, I am jus hoping hear from someone who is currently using the MacMini+iPad setup and want to know how they are liking it as well as is the screen fitting well with apps such as AirDisplay?

I noticed that if you run OnLive app n use windows 7/8 on the iPad it is quiet good and with the above mentioned keyboard the possibilities of using the iPad comfortably would be increased no?

Simply I'm jus looking to find someone who is using the setup to share their experience.

I understand, and that is why I can't even open the iPad thread any longer.;)

BTW- Don't know if I mentioned I am a current 2011 2.5 mini/ipad3 owner

I replaced a MacBook Pro with a mini and an 11" Air, and I'm very happy with the setup. I also have a new iPad, which I like, but I wouldn't want to give up the keyboard and trackpad. That keyboard case you linked to is very cool, but would it be enough? Perhaps with light use, certainly for email and web surfing, but not for the large Excel spreadsheets I often use (iOS Numbers can barely open them).

As for the screen fitting, that's not as good as I would like. The problem is the limited resolutions you can choose on a mini, which don't fit the screen of an Air, iPad, or iPhone without black bars either at the sides or the top and bottom. It works ok an on Air if the mini is connected to TV, (720p fits almost perfectly) but that wouldn't fit the iPad either.

I'm running a base Mac mini with 8gb ram and SSD and a 32gb iPad 2. Have had this setup since October and love it. Really have no use for a laptop on the go. I use the iPad for work for meetings and walk throughs I do regularly at a lot of locations. Just hoping for a nice excel and office app soon. Use splash top to get stuff from my mini if I'm on the go and I use cloudon for cloud storage. Then use Citrix for my work computer login and have access to work printers that way. Spend probably 80% of the time on my iPad on the Internet and email. The other playing angry birds or watching tv shows. Also use it in the car for a iPod since I'm stuck with a droid phone from work til August. Unless you need full computer power on the go I love the setup. The iPad is just a awesome device to have and a lot more portable the a laptop. No matter if I'm working in the garage or walking around the house. The iPad can be in my hand and in use. The mini is really just my media storage with all my music and bluray rips I use it for.

Thank you, exactly what I was looking for:), Hopefully I can get my Macbook Pro sold so I can invest in a similar setup:D, or even save up enough money to get a iPad 3 but I always found it too overwhelming having a iPad+Macbook Pro as they are both portable I only end up using one because I had a iPad 2 in the past and I sold it last december because I did not use it for almost two months. ....but much rather flip my MBP n get a Mac Mini....cause I can jus hook it up to my TV and use it to watch movies n music via my tv when at home and use similar apps to yours when I am out n about:)

I have an iPad 1, Macbook Pro 13" and Mac Mini and I prefer the Macbook Pro due to the portability, but it depends on your needs too.

mini plus ipad here

I have been using a mini and an iPad 2 since the iPad 2 was available. My wife had an iPad 1 for a year so I was pretty familar with the iPad's capabilities. While I am older (68) and my requirements are probably different the iPad serves most of our needs at home and all of them on the go.

I have several (3) Ham Radio applications that will not run on the iPad. These applications connect to the Ham Radio station via USB and line level audio and provide complete control of the radio via the mini. VNC allows me to access these functions on the go when needed.

The real HOOK in my case is iChat. Twice a day I am part of a four person video iChat and this must be done via an OS X box.... The mini handles this function. The Ham Radio station interface plus iChat is the only reason I keep the mini. One on one video chats are handled via FaceTime but conferences require iChat/iMessage.

The music and podcasts that we consider necessary fit nicely on either of our 64Gig iPads and the iCloud handles our needs nicely.

that is great, quick clear-up tho, when you say you use iChat...that means u must use it directly on the Mac-Mini correct? because I never heard about using the iPad's camera via VNC/Remote Desktop apps for iChat or similar apps...

Correct. That is the "hold" that the mini has on me. I can not particioate In an iChat 4 way video conference on the IOS boxes.

I use a Mini quad core with the new iPad as my monitor. I've been headless for about a year, with a 2010 server and the first iPad originally. I guess that wouldn't work for everybody, but I like having the iPad as a monitor. For one thing I can still work on my desktop while in the living room gaming on my pc. It works with or without a keyboard or trackpad.

Thank you all for the feedback, I instead decided to go with a Macbook Air 13" instead of the Mac Mini, will be getting an iPad 3 64GB 4G once the prices for second hand drop a bit...right now they are selling for around $750 on local classifieds where I live.

For now I am loving my Macbook Air 13:)

I sold my MacBook pro to buy a Mac mini and iPad 3. I just felt like having both a very quick MacBook pro and Mac mini was a bit over the top and that I wouldn't use the MacBook pro very often since I'm usually in my room when I get on my computer. The iPad is great around the house and shows websites and what not very well. However, I do miss being able to watch flash content. I'm looking to now get a MacBook air to use when I'm out and about.

Same here... Sort of

I had the same thought process awhile back before I took a much needed break from school. At the time (10moths-ish ago) I had a Dual G5 1.8 and a iBook G3/900 that filled the bulk of my school needs. I also had a DA Dual/533 that was a dream of a server for all things media in the house. But as demands stepped up for studies, I figured I needed to step into the intel world.
I sold the lot, and got a decked i7 2011 mini and an Acer iconia A500 tablet to get my linux fix. It worked out pretty well for awhile. The mini does damn near everything I throw at it and them some. While the Acer tab is really a nice machine to use. Airplay worked reasonably well, with a 24 and 22 lcd's hooked up to the mini I did not have much need for it.
Dropbox came in handy as well as logmein as others have said. But there were a few killers in the equation:

1. Single application at a time. The androids tabs have the same issue as any other. While you can have many "active" app's running you have to physically switch between them. Which for me was bothersome to say the least.

2. I purchased a very nice bluetooth keyboard/case combo for my a500, for light things: email, browsing etc. It was and still is great, but abhorrent to say the least when it came to classes that demanded a lot of lecture notes. To get around that, I did try a few app's that amplified the internal mike for audio recording to maybe play them back and transpose them later on my mini no matter what I did, I could not filter ambient noise enough to make it worth while.

So flash forward to a few months back. Strapped for cash and with a setup that worked for the most part, I found my solution. This PB 1.5/15 that I am typing on now. It was dirt cheap. A rock solid machine, with an amazing keyboard, battery life, screen and build quality. It does everything I demand of it daily and never skips a beat! Not bad for a $50.00 find on Criag's list. :D

I still have my tablet, and it is great for content consumption. It is waiting for me in the morning to browse the news over my morning tea, it streams netflix and hulu while I make dinner and what not. I do not regret the purchase, however, if I had really looked at what I needed everything to do for me in my daily tasks? I would have also gone with a mini/air setup.

Sorry for the long-winded post! Just my experience in it all. :)

Thats great buddy! Glad every things working out for you:), I cant wait to get a iPad 3:D, just tight on money so can't afford one right now but hopefully I can in the near future....would be nice but for now I am living it up with my iPhone 4S and MBAir 13":) btw buying things used/new on craigslist is great, I do all my expensive electronic shopping from local classifieds because I have $200-$600 easily....

Shweet!

Right there with ya. I love my mac hardware, but there is a reason there are cheap linux boxes in the house! :D I am interested in how your are sorting out with your MBAir. Does the screen give you problems as far as productivity? Or do you use dedicated spaces to get things done?

I only ask because, I use a 24" and 22" lcd's hooked up to my mini, and I use every inch of space across eight 'virtual desktops'. I have 6 active spaces on my 15" PB and I find the screen limiting. I would love to have a 17" MBP for all my mobile computing/school needs but I think I would have to lever my first born for one! So, being that is not in the cards, and here in Northern California there are some nice airs on the resale market, I might be able to make it work.

if you plan to run that many desktops I think your best bet is a macbook pro....or the high end macbook air with the 1.8GHz i7....the i5 is amazing but for that much i think it might be little slow....Virtual Desktop/Spaces I only hav 2.....I don't really need that much space as I only run about 4-5 applications at any given time....rarely go over as I just close them after I am done using. Also the 13" Air has the same resolution as the 15" MBP(unless you get the high res) 1440x900 and that is the reason I got it because I had the 15" MBP earlier so for me I don't feel any resolution or space lost at all just smaller screen size but either way I'm loving it. I do have a 19" monitor but never used it yet. oh and I don't know how you will be able to use dual monitors with a Air....thats something you will hav to find out cause I honestly have no clue...I'm sure PB's back in the day had more connections to extend desktops
