Anyone have any news on the 2011 Mac Mini? I'm really looking forward to buying one but I want to wait till the next one. Anyone have any info about the release date and tech specs?

So next month? Cuz I have a 5,1 Macbook Pro and last i checked on the apple recycling gift card thing I could get $800 for it. Do you think that's worth it? Cuz I already have an Ipad2(16GB White) and Iphone4 as mobile devices. So a laptop seems kinda pointless.

If you really don't want the portability, it sounds like a good deal (provided you have the peripherals) to upgrade the hardware at no cost (unless you're taking a few BTO options, $800 won't get you all that much beyond the base Mini).
However, there are multiple versions of the Macbook Pro 5,1, and just how much of an upgrade it'll be depends on which you have.

I'm buying it for college. I already have a 25" hp monitor, and apples bluetooth keyboard. So I have all the stuff I need. I just don't see the point of a laptop anymore

Remember though, you will need an adapter to connect your monitor to your Mini-- since it uses a mini display port. Just saying so when you get back home from the store you don't get any unpleasant surprises.
It would be great if the Mini did come alongside with Lion.. I've been waiting far too long to replace my aging Dell desktop
edit: unless your monitor has a HDMI in, you could just use a HDMI cable, as the Mini sports one.

They come with one. At least ours did when we bought it new to hook up our monitor.
The Mini currently comes with an HDMI->DVI adapter. Just be sure to check the fine print when the new one comes out. Adapters from monoprice are <$10 and work fine.

I know Thunderbolt is a given, but I'd also like to take advantage of a new WD Passport drive, which has a 3.0 connection.
I'd hope Apple wouldn't pass up an upgrade, just to push users towards Thunderbolt (not rumour-mongering, I just don't know how this typically goes)

Yep, you are quite right. Though upgrading directly from Apple is a financial suicide
-- It will either have Sandy Bridge or AMD.. I'm going for the former.I can't guarantee anything, but I'm sure the MM won't have USB 3.0. Apple want to set an industry standard with the implementation of TB and if it weren't because so many peripherals use USBs, they would be gone too. A good indicator we won't see USB 3 would be the recently refreshed MBP and iMac models, which introduced TB and no news on USB3.
Not until next year, Apple wont include it until its integrated into the chipset and Intel will be doing that with next years "Ivy Bridge" platform

I really hope they take the idea of their Mac Mini Server so that way we have the opportunity to have two hard drives (not just one) and besides they're trying to move away from consumers to rely on optical drives with iCloud.
All this upcoming model really needs is a bare minimum of a Core-i3 Sandy Bridge and if they still put on a dedicated graphics card (it'd just be a big plus)

Get the new Mac Mini and also buy a Dell Ultrasharp U2711. It kind of future proofs you as the monitor will last for a ling time and all you have to do then going forward is but a new Mac Mini or whatever. Plus you have the portability of the Mini.
But then for the price, you're near enough to getting an iMac 27in. Same display (Glossy though) and a better computer. But you're stuck then with the processor, hard drive etc going forward from there alongside the screen.

Do you need the 27" display? Dell's Ultrasharp U2211h is currently on sale for ~$210... it's a nice 1920x1080 IPS screen, currently using it with my Mini. I traded in a 27" iMac for my current setup, as the glossy screen was too much to bear. The dramatic step-down in specs though is quite noticeable.
If you're feeling adventurous you could always build a hackintosh

Well lots of ifs in my reply, if the new mini comes with T Bolt if T bolt is bootable if T bolt has storage units that are available the mini would be better. One more if > if you do not mind using an external hdd with your mini

Here's my biased opinion: If you have the $500 extra that a MBP 13" costs and if you EVER anticipate needing mobility (and I can't imagine anyone doesn't), then I'd say go for that. If funds are tight and you never leave home, the Mini is your machine.
At this point I'd hold off and wait for the new Mini; who knows, it may come with a C2D processor (kidding) and the decision will be made for you.

I'm kind of needing to get another mac for the office. It's going to be doing general office stuff. I'm debating between getting a used (but in great shape) 2010 model mini for $550, or going i5 hackintosh for a couple of hundred more.

The headless imac osx86 promises to be a lot more machine for the money, and could just about be a workstation slash server. But I don't know if I want to frak with editing kexts and the like every time there's an upgrade.

I have both a MacBook unibody and a Mac mini - one thing to think about is that the laptop can be used around the house, like while watching TV on the couch, where the mini can be used where it is.
So, even if you don't travel with your laptop, having one can be pretty handy at times.
While we're already on a wish list for new mini specs, how about something faster than a 4500 rpm drive? Even a notebook 7200, for pete's sake.
As far as the office, I'm thinking about hauling my 2.4 aluminum mb to the office for the new person for now. For all but the graphics processor, it has the same or better specs than the base mini (same processor, more ram, faster, bigger hard drive), etc. Haul down the BT kb and mouse while I'm at it.
Might be a good way to hedge my bets and see if apple does anything to the mini in the next few weeks.
BTW, does anyone know for sure if an external TB drive will be bootable or not? And if not, is that due to the restrictions of TB itself, or apple limiting it?
