I ordered this cable some time ago to connect to my projector. (KabelDirekt (35 feet white) HDMI Cable (1080p 4K 3D High Speed with Ethernet ARC) - TOP Series)
It worked normally with my 2014 mini's HDMI out, as well as an Xbox.
I switched to a 2011 mini, and via its HDMI, I get only static. The cable works fine when connected to Thunderbolt via an adaptor. Shorter HDMI cables work fine with the mini's HDMI port.
Any insight into what this might be? Some feature of the cable that isn't supported by the 2011 perhaps?
