2012 13'' pro bought new finally gave way.
Changed battery 3x times. R key stopped working and I was going to change bottom case but now the screen gave way (not sure if it's the cord or actual screen). Meh, probably time to dump this.

Want to transfer the hard drive though.

What year should I get next?

Just a heads up I have a 2021 m1, just looking for something cheap that will replace what this was (something I can touch with damp fingers while I scroll through recipes in the kitchen and something my 6 year old could watch movies on and me not worry too much if an accident happened).
Not interested in an ipad, already have one.

You say you have a iPad and a 2021 M1, so it sounds like you are already set. Is the 2021 M1 the iPad or a laptop? For kitchen work, I use the iPad, without issue. Given the 6 year old usage, I’d suggest a cheapo/used iPad, so you don’t have to worry about a newer one getting damaged.

As far as data transfer goes, you can get a simple 2.5” external case, take the bottoms off the old laptop, extract the drive, put it in the case and then plug the case into another computer to access.

If you want to scroll through things with damp fingers in a kitchen, I don't see why an iPad wouldn't be exactly what to use.

If you were using a 2012 MacBook, some sort of older or refurbished iPad should be perfect.

Here are some Macbook Pro 13" selections (used):
I bought a 13" 2012 (Unibody) last year in mint shape for $169. I installed an SSD and maxed out the RAM to 16Gb. Running macOS Monterey (Opencore). Running great...
