I have a 27 inch iMac from 2011, been booting to a thunderbolt SSD fine for the last 2 months, today I got my new Mac mini and I can't seem to boot to the SSD off of the same thunderbolt connection.

Any ideas why?

You need a custom build of Mac OS X to boot the mini. The instance on the Thunderbolt drive does not have that build.

Or to wait for 10.8.3, which is rumored to be a unified release for all Macs.

I think I might just abandon my purchase of the Mac Mini... I don't think any monitor I buy will look half as good as the 27 inch iMac's and though the Mac Mini is fast. It's not necessary, I was also hoping to save some money by getting one and selling my iMac, but I don't think I will at this point.

I've read here that you can use the iMac monitor as a monitor for the mini...with the right adapter.
