I decided to acquire a 2012 mac mini following the underwhelming 2014 update. In the process I find myself in a unique situation: I know own 2 2012 Mac Minis. Collectively I've spent $1200.
One is the base model, i5 with the 500GB hard drive, with RAM upgraded to 16GB. I've also purchased (but haven't installed) the ifixit kit to put in a 500GB SSD which I already have.
The other is the 2.3gz i7, with 16GB RAM and a 1T Fusion drive.
Obviously the i7 is better. However, here's my debate. This machine will primarily host an file server, with intermittent video conversion. My main computer is a MBA.
Which should I sell?
The argument to sell the i7 would be primarily that I'll get the most value, and that other than intermittent file conversion, I won't see the benefit to the extra cores in the processor.
The argument to sell the i5 would be that I'll be using the best computer, and native fusion drives are sweet. Any other thoughts?
