I bought the 2.3GHz i7 model. I'm using it as a media center. My setup is using SiliconDust's HomeRunPrime (renting the cable card from Verizon) so I can continue to watch and record the channels I'm subscribed to.
I am running Windows 8.1 via BootCamp to use Windows Media Center.
I installed the Crucial M550 512GB SSD, keeping the 1TB stock drive. I just installed 16GB RAM (which may be overkill).
I occasionally use Handbrake to convert these files, so they're viewable on my iPhone & iPad...and I can share recording with friends via my NAS.
Is the 2.3GHz overkill? Or would the base model suffice -- with a SSD and 16GB of RAM? I prefer using WMC vs. using other apps like Plex.
I also plan on getting the Synology 214play (in the coming months -- holding out for a good deal). Currently I'm storing the files on My Cloud EX2 (was able to buy the diskless version from Amazon for $109) -- I have 2 x 4TB WD Red drives.
