Well, officially, Apple states that both the i5 and i7 models will support up to 8gb, but others state that it will work with 16gb just fine.

Ark states that both of those processors will support up to 32gb, but unless you REALLY know what you're doing and can get the speed and the CAS timing correct, I wouldn't recommend pushing your computer past its limits like that or you run a serious risk of burning it out. You're more than likely going to face thermal issues at the very least.

The CPU can utilise it but the logic board can't so in answer to your question no it can't.

It seems that no one really tried it or at least documented the experiment on the internet. Sometimes Mac firmware refuses non-compatible modules only on the first slot. This was the case on my 2010 Mini: ir refuses a 1333MHz module on the first slot, but not on the second one. Moreover, if I rewrite the RAM module descriptor to inform it's a 1066MHz module, the Mac firmware simply accepts it, even if it's actually a 1333MHz module.

In short, I'd like to see the experiment in practice, not only in theory. In theory, most Macs of that time supported a maximum of 2x4GB RAM.
