Hey everyone,

I have a small problem. I have a Mid 2012 MacBook Pro with Catalina installed.

I'm not sure what's going on. When ever I start the computer up it doesn't play the startup chime. It does work when I press and hold the power button to shut it down.

Is my system not shutting down completely when I shut it down the normal way?

Very confused.

i think, from memory, with that macOS one had to run a terminal command to turn on/off the chime?
i never shut down from power button - always from apple menu/shut down.
Here's an article on restoring the startup chime. https://appleinsider.com/articles/20/02/22/how-to-turn-your-mac-startup-chime-back-on

Thanks for the reply.

It works one time right after reseting the NVRAM.
It works one time right after holding the power button to shut down.

I've used the following commands:
Sudo nvram -d SystemAudioVolume
This works one time. In order for the chime to work on next time on startup, I have to run this every time I startup.

Suddenly nvram StartupMute=%00
This never works.

When the startup chime works, the startup screen is bright. I like this. But it's a dull gray when the startup chime doesn't work.

Is there a correlation between the two?

I'm stuck and I need help.

Help?

**EDIT

I just reinstalled Catalina and it works fine. I think it was the Updates that caused the issue. Should I not update it? Or should I update it and have no startup chime. I really like the startup chime. Lol.

well, i guess live with whatever suits you.
Catalina was one of my favourite macOS.
if your current installation works, then no need to update.
Apple says update to the latest version available for ‘security patches’.
yet i wonder sometimes …
(personally, i find the chime annoying, especially when mac updates overnight and it awakens me with a chime at 0300)
