I recently acquired a mid-2012 MacBook Pro that works great but is very difficult to power on. It powers on by itself if I disconnect battery and AC then plug in AC (battery optional). Power button will not power it on OR off (can't even reset SMC), no luck with shorting power pads either. I have tested with 2 known working keyboard units to rule out a bad power button.

The OP had already eliminated a power button / keyboard cable problem, so if you haven't done so, that's something to look at.

Once you eliminate power button / keyboard, being unable to power on with battery but able without battery suggests short or blown cap on the battery connector portion of the logic board, but a repair shop that can do logic board diagnosis / repair would need to test and confirm that.
