My 2012 non retina MacBook Pro 15 inch is I think on the verge of packing up completely but I’m wondering if there is anything I can do to make it last a little longer? currently trying to copy all my raw photos over which admittedly I’ve been bad at backing up recently.

It’s been working ok until this week but had at least one vertical green line on the screen for a few months - sometimes a pink line? This week it’s started crashing every few minutes, only using safari and then finder to transfer files to an external drive so not been doing much! Spinning beach ball then shuts itself down and trys to start itself a couple of times before showing a grey screen with a folder and a question mark on it. I’ve been manually holding down the power button to start it up without that loop.

I’m guessing it’s a hardware issue because of the line of the screen? I’m trying to get my files off before messing with it too much but any help appreciated! Having to move a couple of folders at a time before it crashes.

Accepted its probably time for a new one so looking for advice on what to replace it with too - mainly for using Lightroom and photoshop with raw files and multiple layers.

If you can't keep it from crashing long enough to get your files copied, maybe you can connect it to another Mac and open it via target disk mode.

Literally any current Mac will work for what you're talking about and will be massively, massively faster than the one you have. I bet the 15" MacBook Air would be a great replacement, and would be perfect for Photoshop and Lightroom. Budget for a backup drive while you're at it :)

Thanks for your reply. Looks like I may need to try that. Do you know if a 2006 Intel Mac mini would work with target disk mode? I still have one in the attic if it will still boot!

Thank you yes I imagine can’t be hard to beat a 12 year old machine 😅

If worse comes to worse or it becomes too painful to just copy a few files from it at a time, assuming the HD is not the issue, you could remove it from the dying Macbook Pro, pop it into a cheap HD case and go on your merry way.
Here's a link on getting to the hard drive.
Good luck
