2012 mbp new battery at 0% and not charging

I found out my battery has swollen up so I ordered a new one from ifixit. When I installed this new battery though, it doesn't charge and shows 0%. I've done the resets as instructed bit nothing seems to have an effect.
The computer seems to run much much slower with the battery installed that with no battery. Any ideas? Thanks.

Bad battery ! If you have done the Verified SMC reset than it is a bad battery, return it.
