Hello All,

I'm running a 500GB Crucial SSD, half dedicated to IOS and half to Win 7. I tried updating my OS to 10.10 without backing anything up unfortunately, and now the IOS partition is stuck in an unmounted state and can't be repaired (exit code 8 every time). I tried making a bootable USB with Transmac but my machine can't see the recovery drive as a startup or recovery option, though I *can* boot to Linux from USB. Win 7 works just fine.

Does anyone know if I have a good recovery option left that I haven't tried yet? Failing that, what is my best option for data backup, if I in fact have an option? If the partition can be accessed in a mounted/R-W state, I don't know how to make that happen. The most recent log is copied below:

Have you tried booting up into recovery mode using command + r? It should boot you into the recovery partition where you can then use Disk utility to format your disk or attempt a repair. You’ll also be able to reinstall MacOS from here if needed.

As for recovering your data, If disk utility can’t repair the volume and allow you to boot, then you’ve lost your data. Nothing can be done really so a reinstall would be your best bet. Next time make a backup so you can at least restore if an update goes wrong or you have HD failure.

For the record macs run macOS not iOS.

Thanks Deadworlds. I've tried booting inbooting into recovery mode that way, but didn't want to do anything destructive till I'd exhausted my data recovery options. This sucks! Should had a backup, acourse.

Happy to help! Have you tried using the repair option in disk utility?

Yes, I think that is when I run into exit code 8. Disk can't be repaired, backup and reinstall - to paraphrase the other exit error that shows up in red bold. It sure seems like the problem is with the install/update process as I had no issues until this update. The SSD is even new and gently used. (Dammit!)

Not that it matters here, but since I have no one else to gripe at! ...this crash happens just as my resume has been requested by a promising prospective employer, and all I have saved is the PDF (not the editable Word!) copy, which unfortunately won't do. More bad resume editing means less good life times. Dammit.

I’d suspect the SATA cable that connects your SSD to the computer may be bad. It’s a common failure in 2012 MBPs. They’re inexpensive and easy to replace.

Hmm...interesting. Can't hurt to replace the part, as you're suggesting. Thanks!
