I need to install the 144.0.0.0.0 firmware update for my machine but I want to buy a newer AMD card for my Metal Graphics card.
Is there a way to patch with a newer card? or would I still need to use one off of Apples list of supported cards for Mojave.

I think I found my answer never mind this can be deleted.
From what I gather I can boot Mojave but will have no acceleration so I should be able to still patch with a 6600xt.

Not sure you can boot Mojave with 6600XT on cMP. You can do it on a hack without acceleration, but the problem in the cMP appears before the operating system selection.
Hmmm LOL I was just thinking that Mojave would just tell me it isn't a Metal card and I am not sure if OpenCore would let me use a 6600xt.

Don't you have to be running at least macOS 12.1? I thought only that had drivers for the 6600XT?

Edit: you will also have to patch the ROM and flash that onto the 6600XT. As @startergo mentioned, the cMP will not POST without it. see my post #2 above.
I am thinking I might have to stay with the easy solution a RX580.
It just stinks paying about the same amount of money for a rx580 that a 6600xt cost.

really?

That is awesome news!

Every time I am going to reflash my BootROM (in Mojave), I always take out my current GPU and put my RX-580 back in, but next time I do it, I will leave the 6800XT intact!
Always with Lilu and WEG loaded though. You have to test without them.

The 6650XT just came out, so maybe if you wait a bit, the 6600XT should drop even more in price?

I do agree with you, I would NOT buy a card from 2017 in 2022... but then again, if you don't have access to Windows for flashing it, that could prove to be an issue....
