2012 mini 4k tv

i currently use a 2012 mac mini with an hd tv as part of my media centre set up

i'm thinking of buying a new tv soon but won't be replacing the mini for awhile

i understand that the mini won't output 4k resolution

my question is:

if i buy a 4k tv will the mini send 1080p to the tv or not be able to power it at all?

i thought that would be the case but in all my web searching i could not find it stated that clearly and simply so i wanted to be sure
