2012 mac mini w/ samsung 840 SSD setup as fusion black magic @ 5GB stress level results.
Anybody have this same setup, what are your speeds?
My writes test can vary from 50mb to 160mb
Reads can vary from 300 to 480
I havent been able to update the Samsung 840 firmware to the latest version as I don't have an optical drive, I have seen posts that it can be done via USB but I can't figure it out.

Without an optical drive on the main SATA bus of the computer you cannot update the firmware via OS X. The only other way will be to install Windows in BootCamp and run the Samsung Magician software to do it.

When choosing a target disk from blackmagic the sd is not an option so i chose ether fusion or downlaods as the target but I am not sure which disk BM is writing to?

I've been following that 830/840 thread for months and i think my write speeds may be low
I think Hellhammer or someone said this update should not matter but I do remember the 07 firmware update had something to do with write functions.

Yeah, I am running win8 under parallels and I think my original win8 was on a usb stick and i might have erased it. Can i install the win 8 that is on the mini running under parallels under bootcamp? I do have the win8 product key.

Should be able to.

I found that I had the exact issue last night ... same computer, same SSD, same benchmark app. I was getting the same speeds you show.

I enabled trim with Trim Enabler, disabled last access time stamps, rebooted and tried again.

Screenshot of results attached.

I disabled it because it causes constant access to the drive for a feature that I don't have a use for ... "Updated" is more important to me than "Accessed", so it's unnecessary wear on the drive and performance overhead, however slight either might be.

I used the paid version of Trim Enabler ($10) to do it, but you can also do it via the command line.

See step 4 in this thread.

I used step 1 (Trim Enabler) and step 4 (via Trim Enabler) and my benchmarks returned to the expected results that I get with the same drive on my MBP.

Best,

Thanks, I'll give that a whirl

hey doc, what firmware version on u 840 ssd?

I was wondering that myself. How can I tell? And can it be updated via a USB stick as someone mentioned?

Away from the computer for an hour or two ... I'll check back here when I return.

See sandbox earlier post on the thread for finding version.

I'm dumb but i have tried everything mentioned on these threads for about 5 months and haven't gotten it to update. tried usb stick it can't find the 840, finally installed windows under bootcamp and it went a step or 2 further but still encountered some kind of error that ended it. IMHO we would have to remove it to update it. one MR member, maybe it was Hellhammer posted the update probably very minor and might not even affect us.
I think it would might work via win8 bottcamp on non-fusion. is your setup fusion? mine is.

You bring up a good point; that the update might not even make a difference that we'd notice.

I've got the 840 and a spindle drive installed ... no fusion. I just deleted my BC partition about a month ago because I never used it, so I probably won't bother going that route. I could add it as another drive to my gaming PC and see if that works ... again though, I'd have to read something promising about the firmware update to really bother. The speeds I am seeing now are what I expect, so I think all is well.

128Gb

i have this drive but the 500Gb version i also know that the 128gb version is alot slower i mean alot so that will be your problem!

Ah, mine is 500GB as well.

I did manage to update my firmware but did not see any performance difference in the benchmarks.
